Social Studies

The George Fischer Middle School Social Studies Department is committed to helping students develop an understanding and appreciation of the past. Through the study of history, geography, economics, civics, and culture, students gain the historical perspective necessary to become critical thinkers, informed citizens, and active participants in an increasingly interconnected global society.

Our curriculum is aligned with the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework and encourages students to explore diverse perspectives, analyze historical events, and make meaningful connections between the past and the present.

Grade 5 Social Studies

Students study the history and geography of the Western Hemisphere, examining the development of cultures, civilizations, and empires. The course explores interactions among societies and compares the governmental and economic systems of modern nations throughout North, Central, and South America.

Grade 6 Social Studies

Students focus on the history and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere. The course examines the rise and development of civilizations and empires, interactions among societies, and trends in government and economic systems across the Eastern Hemisphere.

Grade 7 Social Studies

Grade 7 Social Studies is the first year of a two-year study of United States History. Beginning with the earliest peoples in North America during the Ice Age, students trace the development of the United States through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The course emphasizes key historical events, geographic factors, and the evolving American experience.

Grade 8 Social Studies

Grade 8 Social Studies continues the study of United States History begun in Grade 7. Starting with the Industrial Age, students examine America's growth as a nation through World War II and explore the major events, movements, and issues that have shaped post-World War II America. The course challenges students to connect historical themes with contemporary issues and the world around them.
