Physical Education Mission and Activities
The mission of the GFMS Physical Education Department is to engage students in meaningful physical activities that support their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
Throughout the school year, students are introduced to a variety of lifetime activities, fitness concepts, individual skills, and team activities. Our goal is to help students develop the skills, knowledge, confidence, and healthy habits necessary to enjoy and value physical activity throughout their lives.
Students in grades 5–8 will participate in a variety of activities throughout the school year, including:

Activities may vary based on grade level, facility availability, weather, and instructional needs.

PE Grading System and Helpful Hints
GFMS Physical Education Grading and Expectations:
Grading: Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 participate in Physical Education throughout the school year and receive a numeric grade based on 100 points per marking period.
- Participation:

Students are expected to participate appropriately and consistently in class. 1–3 points may be deducted per class when participation expectations are not met.

Students are expected to follow directions and class procedures, give their best effort, arrive on time and report to their assigned attendance area, participate safely and appropriately, demonstrate kindness, respect, and good sportsmanship, work cooperatively with classmates and teachers, follow the GFMS Code of Conduct

- Preparation:
- 1 point may be deducted per class when a student is not properly prepared for Physical Education.
- Students should come to class with appropriate athletic sneakers and athletic attire that allow them to participate safely and comfortably.
- Dress Requirements:

Athletic sneakers—(sneakers must be secure to the foot and have a full heel). Non-lace-up athletic sneakers are acceptable as long as they remain secure during physical activity. Foam-style shoes, slides, and other footwear that is not secure to the foot are not appropriate for Physical Education.

Athletic clothing—T-shirt and/or sweatshirt, athletic shorts, sweatpants, or other appropriate athletic bottoms. Tank tops and crop tops are not considered appropriate Physical Education attire.

Medical Excuses & Activity Restrictions:
Medical situations, injuries, and activity restrictions will be handled on an individual basis. Parents/guardians should contact their child's assigned Physical Education teacher with any questions or concerns regarding participation.
Class Expectations & Reminders:

To maintain a safe, positive, and productive learning environment:

Come to class prepared and ready to participate.
-
Always give your best effort.
-
Arrive on time or bring an appropriate pass if you are late.

Cell phones, earbuds/AirPods, and personal recording devices are not permitted during class.

Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle.

Gum chewing is not permitted. Books and personal belongings should be placed in designated areas.

Hats and sunglasses should not be worn indoors unless permission has been provided.

Treat classmates, teachers, equipment, and facilities with respect.

Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.

Our goal extends beyond success in Physical Education class. We want our students to develop an appreciation for movement, fitness, teamwork, and healthy living that will encourage them to remain physically active for a lifetime.
