GFMS Celebrates UNITY Day

Posted Date: 10/27/26 (02:44 PM)

Students throughout George Fischer Middle School came together on October 21 to celebrate UNITY Day. Wearing orange to show support for kindness, acceptance and inclusion, students spent time reflecting on the importance of community, unity and individuality.

“As part of the day's activities, students in all grade-level Social Studies classes participated in Project Connect, a paper chain project that encouraged them to think about the role they play in making our school a welcoming place for everyone," said Lisa Steiner, chair of the Social Studies Department. "Students shared ideas about how to help others feel safe, included, and valued.”
Some of their suggestions included complimenting someone who tries something new, inviting someone to sit together at lunch, smiling in the hallways, treating others with kindness, and being open to new friendships.
Students also took time to reflect on what makes each person unique and how those differences strengthen the school community. Classrooms were filled with thoughtful conversations about respect, belonging, and creating an inclusive environment at GFMS.
The spirit of UNITY Day extended to other classes as well. In some eighth-grade Math classes, students discussed ways they could help build unity throughout the school, while other classes spread positive messages by writing encouraging notes along the sidewalks to welcome students when they entered the building.
UNITY Day served as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference and help ensure that GFMS remains a place where everyone feels they belong.
